Student Volunteers

The student volunteer program is an essential part of the UMD Data Challenge. SV’s help keep the DC running smoothly. Being a student volunteer will provide you an opportunity to participate in the Data Challenge as a supporter, assist the DC team before and throughout the challenge timeframe, and network with information professionals by interacting with sponsors during the event.

As a DC20 SV, you will be expected to help at least 5 hours a week during each week in February to help prepare for the event, assisting with such tasks as helping unpack the swag from the sponsors, stuffing the participant bags, and preparing the judges folder. You will also be required to attend the events to support the DC20 Team doing a variety of tasks such as checking in participants, handing out information, serving food, setting up and cleaning up.

You will be required to attend the following events to provide your support:

  • Kick-off Day February 22, 2020 from 8am – 6pm
  • Presentation Day February 29, 2019 from 8am – 6pm

You will be required to attend only 1 of the following events to provide your support:

  • Mentor/Researcher Team Building Event January 31, 2020 from 3-8pm
  • Student Participant Team Building Event February 7, 2020 from 4-9pm

What will I do when I volunteer?

You will agree to a volunteer contract, in which you agree to:

  • Work 5 hours each week in February before DC20 assisting with preparation tasks
  • Attend both full DC20 Saturday events
  • Attend 1 DC20 Pre-event
  • Show up on time to tasks
  • Act professionally and courteously to all participants and sponsors during any DC20 event

In return you will be part of the DC20 team, be provided 2 meals and snacks throughout the day, and receive an awesome volunteer t-shirt to wear during the events!

Students across all majors and educational levels are encouraged to apply to be a student volunteer. All you need is a friendly, enthusiastic attitude and a willingness to help!
