Mentors

All sponsors, UMD researchers, or data enthusiasts, regardless of discipline, may be mentors for student teams; no teaching, mentor, or data analysis experience necessary.

  • Mentors guide student teams as they work through exploring the dataset, selecting a research question and understanding the organizations problem statement.
  • Mentors will work virtually with their assigned student teams during the Kick-off day, and supporting the teams virtually for the remainder of the week.
  • There is no limit to the number of mentors from an organization.

Mentors will be invited to attend the Mentor and Judge Information Session on January 29, 2021. This 3-hour workshop hosted by the UMD Data Challenge Team and industry data scientists will provide mentors with expectations, tips and ideas for managing a team during the UMD Data Challenge, and an opportunity to network with other data enthusiasts.

Mentors must commit by December 15, 2020.

Judges

Judges will virtually evaluate the student team’s final products during the Showcase and Judging Day on February 27, 2020.

  • Judges will be provided with the scoring rubric and a score card for notes for each team, which includes the categories that the projects and presentations will be evaluated on.
  • Judging criteria, procedures and schedules will be emailed to judges a week before the Kick-off Event.
  • A copy of each team’s abstract will be provided to the judges by 12pm the night prior to the Showcase and Judging Day.

Supply a Dataset

Provide a dataset for the student teams to analyze. Datasets can be from any discipline.

  • Dataset should be accompanied by:
    • A short statement about why this dataset has been included in the event
      OR
A problem statement to guide the participants exploration
View previous dataset problem statements here
  • Datasets must be complete and cleaned so the student participants do not need to take the time to complete these actions.

Finalized datasets must be submitted to the Data Challenge Organizing team by November 30, 2020.
