Sponsorship Opportunities

There are many ways to sponsor Data Challenge 2019. You can provide data, mentor participants, judge the final products, and give financial support to help the Data Challenge run. You can also provide any type of swag or literature for the participants. In return there are many benefits to being a DC19 sponsor. Read more about sponsorship opportunities below.

Provide Datasets

Support our inquisitive and data-driven students by providing a dataset for the University of Maryland Data Challenge 2019. From client demographics to website traffic records, our students will analyze the data and determine key findings that can help solve real problems or unveil new information for your organization. Datasets can be provided by any for-profit, nonprofit, government, or educational organization.

When you submit your dataset, be sure to include:

  • A short statement about why this dataset has been included in the event
    OR
  • A problem statement to guide the participants exploration

A few other notes:

  • All datasets must be complete and cleaned so the student participants do not have to take the time to complete these actions
  • There is no limit on the number of datasets that sponsors can provide
  • Sponsors can also provide software codes or API’s to extract data
  • Email datachallenge@umd.edu to find out how to submit your dataset.

Deadline: Datasets must be submitted to the Data Challenge Organizing team by January 20, 2019.

Mentor Participants

Enjoy a hands-on experience fostering the next generation of data scientists by mentoring a student team at the Data Challenge 2019. No data analytics or teaching background needed. We are looking for individuals with the ability to guide students on the process of problem-solving – identifying the question or problem to solve, logically looking at the dataset provided, determining what additional data is needed, and deciding the best way to present findings for judging. Each mentor works with one student team of up to four students.

Mentors are required to attend the Challenge Kickoff in-person (February 23, 9am-5pm, at the UMD College Park campus) to work hands-on with their student team. As the student team works on their project February 24 – March 1, mentors must check in with their team at least twice (electronically is fine) and be generally available for questions throughout the week. Final projects are presented in-person on March 2. Mentor attendance is optional on judging day, but encouraged.

A few other notes:

  • All sponsors connected with Data Challenge, regardless of discipline, may be mentors for student teams; no teaching or mentor experience necessary.
    • There is no limit to the number of mentors from an organization.
  • Mentors spend Kick-off Day at UMD working with their assigned student teams, and supporting the teams virtually for the remainder of the week.
    • Mentors guide student teams as they work through exploring the dataset, selecting a research question and understanding the organizations problem statement
    • If desired, mentors can achieve in-depth analytical explorations of unfamiliar datasets that may inform future research directions
  • Mentors will be invited to attend the Mentor/Researcher Team Building Event on February 1, 2019
    • 3-hour workshop hosted by the UMD Data Challenge Team and industry data scientists
    • Mentorship expectations will be reviewed as will the purpose of the dataset integration theme
    • An example of how to work through a data analytics problem with students will be previewed

Deadline: Mentors must commit by January 20, 2019

Judge Projects

After all the data analysis is done, the questions are answered, and the projects have been complete, we need judges to evaluate the projects and choose the winners during the Research Showcase Judging Day on March 2, 2019.

As a judge, you will be provided with the scoring rubric and a score card for notes for each team, which includes the categories that the projects and presentations will be evaluated on.

A few other notes:

  • Judging criteria, procedures and schedules will be emailed to judges a week before the Challenge Kick-off so you can become familiar with your role and have time to ask questions.
  • A copy of each team’s abstract will be provided to the judges by 6pm the night prior to the Research Showcase Judging Day
  • Yottabyte and Exabyte sponsors may supply one Judge

Deadline: Judges must commit by January 20, 2019
