Are you creative? Analytical? Have a knack for solving complex problems? Team up with your fellow Terps and compete in UMD’s Data Challenge!

The University of Maryland College of Information Studies and the School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation are hosting Data Challenge 2019, a week-long competition where students from the University of Maryland are charged with solving a complex problem by leveraging their analytical skills and creative ideas. As a participant you will solve an information problem based on a dataset of your choice from a sponsoring organization. There will be a competition where you will have the opportunity to present your findings, with a chance to win prizes. During the event days, you will network with company representatives, and listen to industry tech-talks.

You must be registered for the Spring 2019 semester as a student at the University of Maryland. Students across all majors and educational levels are encouraged to participate.

Be a DC 19 Student Volunteer

The student volunteer program is an essential part of the UMD Data Challenge. SV’s help keep the DC running smoothly. Being a student volunteer provides students opportunities to participate in the challenge as a supporter, assist the DC team before and throughout the challenge timeframe, and network with information professionals by interacting with sponsors during the event.

To be a DC19 Student Volunteer, you must be registered for the Spring 2019 semester as a student at the University of Maryland. We are more than happy to accept undergrad, graduate, and PhD students. What we need is friendly, enthusiastic volunteers to help us out!

As a DC19 SV, you will be expected to help at least 5 hours a week, each week in February to help prepare for the event assisting with such tasks as helping unpack the swag from the sponsors, stuffing the participant bags, and preparing the judges folder. You will also be required to attend the events to support the DC19 Team doing a variety of tasks such as checking in participants, handing out information, serving food, setting up and cleaning up.

You will be required to attend the following events to provide your support:

  • Data Challenge Kick-off Day February 23, 2019 from 8am – 6pm
  • Research Showcase Judging Day March 2, 2019 from 8am – 6pm

You will be required to attend only 1 of the following events to provide your support:

  • Mentor/Researcher Team Building Event February 1, 2019 from 3-8pm
  • Student Participant Team Building Event February 8, 2019 from 4-9pm

What will I do when I volunteer?

You will agree to a volunteer contract, in which you agree to:

  • Work 5 hours each week in February before DC19 assisting with preparation tasks
  • Attend both full DC19 Saturday events
  • Attend 1 DC19 Pre-event
  • Show up on time to tasks

In return you will be part of the DC19 team, allowed to attend two of the tech talks, be provided 2 meals and snacks throughout the day, and receive an awesome volunteer t-shirt to wear during the event.

The lottery will close on January 11, 2019 and approximately 15 students will be chosen as SVs and notified by January 20, 2019. All other students who register for the DC19 SV lottery will be assigned a position on the SV waiting list and notified if an SV spot becomes available.
